Thank god its NOT the use of animal blood to stain our nails like the romans did. ( I am not kidding!)

I think Goddess Beauty or RITUALS - is something that makes you feel confident - important - amazing. It makes you love yourself, which in this era can be difficult.

So if coming into a salon or spa once a month to let someone else look after you and be waited on. I say DO IT!

If allowing an hour to catch up with girlfriends once a week and talk trash over coffee or wine, then that needs to be done.

One of the biggest things I notice being in this industry for as long as I have, we just don't love ourselves the way we love our friends and that needs to CHANGE stat!!

Its time we start to see ourselves as the GODDESS we are and allow ourselves to be treated like one. And that is just when we are home.

My family have snuck off camping a few times and while its fun and semi relaxing in between trying to make sure every child has sun protection, hydrated and fed , my skin always comes home a little worse for wear.

Every time I come home from one of our camping adventures I always have this treatment it makes my skin feel all amazing again. And its soooooo nice to have so ME time.

So what is in the Holiday Escape?

Well it starts with an enzyme treatment (enzyme blog here)which is amazing at shifting all those dead skin cells. You know that feeling of dryness and like your skin is super clogged from all that sunscreen? Yeh it removes all that - fresh new skin Ahhh..

Next is the hydrating mask - which is just AHMAZING for your skin, all that sun exposure really REALLY dehydrates your skin so this just adds that hydration back into your skin - which is plumping those cells making them happy and fat again. (less lines)

AND the BEST part is the foot massage while the mask is doing it thing.. just divine especially if you have been on your feet chasing kids all holidays. Who doesn't love a foot massage!

As mums we do EVERYTHING for EVERYONE in our house hold.

ITS OK to allow yourself some time out to recharge your batteries again and allow yourself and skin some love. After all if you feel great, it will beam through and everyone around you will feel great.

xx

Enzymes?! Well they have been around forever but you guys are really only just becoming aware of their absolute awesomeness.

The meaning of an enzyme:

a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.

In real language that means -

Enzymes are molecules that help exfoliate the skin by dissolving the redundant cells on the very top layer of the skin.

The enzymes used in salon are a fruit derivative.

*Pumpkin,

*Pomegranate,

*Mango and

*Papaya

All these types of enzymes happily munch up old tired redundant cells, while being perfectly safe and natural for the skin.

Why do we love them so much?

Because they are natural and safe for all skin types! Sometimes microdermabrasion is to abrasive or harsh for sensitive skins and can do more damage than good. Have you ever been really like REALLY red after a microdermabrasion or your skin feels sensitive to touch for a few days later? Micro is good for thicken built up tough skin - but not for the more fragile thinner skins.

They are also great to use at home. Some beads/grains no matter how fine the texture can be all too much rolling around the skin again causing more inflammation and little micro tears than exfoliating.

Enzymes in homecare can gentle but still effectively remove your redundant cells and INSTANTLY brighten your complexion.

Enzymes are a great first treatment in salon if you have never had a treatment before as the gentle and yet still very effective. They are break down and dissolve all the redundant cells which does 2 major things for your skin

1. Instantly brighten your complexion - Think even skin tone, reduce redness, glowing skin.

2. When your skin exfoliates it sends a message down to the basal layer to start creating more cells. When the basal layer is pumping out new cells it creates plump skin. Fine lines and wrinkles become less apparent.

So if you feel like your skin needs a pick me up - or you have never had a treatment before and want to start taking care of your skin - this is the treatment you need to try and see why WE LOVE ENZYMES so much.

Summer Skin do you need to re-adjust your routine?

Hellllllllllllooooooo Summer!Did you promise yourself a grand beach bod by the time 1st Dec came around? I did........ Let's just say coffee and some yummy lunches won. No beach bod here....

But what I have done is made some readjusting to my skincare because we all know as season change so does our skin needs.

Summer can be a little tricky for the skin and hard for you to understand what's going on. You see, while in winter your skin is dry and flaky it clearly needs moisture. But in summer you are sweating and your skin still feels dry and rough why?

Or its very obvious what is happening, the pigmentation is starting to appear again.

So here are my must dos for creating that fresh dewy even tone skin during the summer season.

1. HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE!!!

Your body temp is up and water moves through your body so much faster than winter. So increase your water intake because you are going to sweat half of it out anyway! Fun fact did you know our skin cell is only 13% water?

2. SLIP SLOP SLAP & WRAP.......

Ok, yes it's little cheesy but it is so true!! If pigmentation is a concern for you avoid any chance your melanocytes (what makes you brown or in some cases just brown in spots) from producing more melanin (pigment). The more protection from the sun you can get the less likely you are going to produce pigment spots. Its a pretty big well derr... but its so easy to think of I am just going to hang out a load of washing I don't need to apply my sunblock today. Oh I only drive to and from work I don't get any sun. its DOESN'T MATTER if its 3 mins or 40 mins, sun is SUN! It will still cause your cells to create more pigment. Fun fact your eyes are receptors and when UV rays are absorb via the retina a signal is sent to create more pigment. Find a pair of good sunnies & rock em!

3. YOU STILL NEED A GOOD FATTY OIL

Your skin routine still needs a good fatty oil. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) think omega 3 or 6. They make up our skins barrier (amongst many other things). The sun is lethal and the first thing it does to our skin is destroy our natural good oil. The results in our skin barrier becoming ruined.

Let me explain our skins barrier:

Imagine salad dressing - The oil that sits on the top and the water component is underneath.

Our skin is exactly the SAME. We have this good fat healthy oil (omega 3) barrier that helps protect our skin but most importantly it keeps the water in underneath.

If the sun depletes your natural oil - what do you think is going to happen to the water? It just evaporates. Leaving your skin very weak and dehydrated leading to premature ageing. And just like that a light bulb moment happens, it's all starting to coming together and making sense now!!

4. VITAMINS A C & B3

These are also essential and need to be a everyday part of your routine. Skin technology is moving along in leaps and bounds it's a great time to be alive to see how precisely detailed scientists can be with what our skin actually needs. But without fail the above 3 vitamins have are proved to:

1. Not only age proof the skin

2. Help reduce and block pigmentation

3. Protect and strength the skin against the sun (think strong skin barrier)!

If you have pigmentation or feeling aged are your skin concerns, you simply MUST have this in your routine. Without these even tone skin can be almost impossible to achieve (especially living Queensland).

These are my top skincare tips for ensuring you have beautiful dewy skin this summer season - the main thing I want you to get out of this is love your skin, protect it with sunblock, nourish with a good oil and water. Finally strengthen your skin to handle what ever season it is. You only have one life and one body. Love your skin and it will love you back. It's that simple.

If you have any questions or want to know more about how to best care your skin during summer, leave a comment below xx.

Loyalty Rewards - Cause we love you

Going way back to the Seaful days we use to have a come in for 6 appointments and you get your eyebrows for free. We where in for a marathon the long haul.

Firstly we needed to build her skin up. We needed her skin to be able to handle change and high concentrate actives after not doing much with her skin at home, it is was impaired and sensitive. We couldn't give her anything to active as her skin was to fragile. Has to be one of the most rewarding jobs ANYONE can have.

To me Seaful Beauty was the party years ( which I did alot of ha!) it was fun, always had a good laugh and vibe going through the salon the smell of nails being done and spray tan in the air, a good laugh of a crazy weekend that was or a party that will be.

As I grew and yes matured (guess kids will do that to you) it was time to let go of the party life... (Even though I still think sometimes I can and only ever make it till midnight with a shitty hangover after.)

I discovered skin and the incredible way it works. I will forever be learning about how incredible our skin is. I know so much and still in so much awe of how quickly sad skin can come back to a full beautiful glow.

I also realised how important it is to take time out. Being a business owner and a mum is full ON. We often forget to take timeout for ourselves, which is silly really because we feel so good after, that we naturally are a much happier person and therfore nicer to our kids or partners.

So now Serenity Skin Spa have evolved and its progression into skin health and allowing you to have time out for yourself. Its a place where you come to feel confident, to feel loved and cared for because you, I and every woman deserves it.

What will the next 13 years bring for Serenity Skin Spa? Who knows, that's one thing I have so immensely enjoyed about business (pretty sure gave me stress pimples too!) whats going to happen next???

Just know at the very core of Serenity it is and will ALWAYS be about how we can empower women with their own confidence. What is Acne? well thats fairly easy to answer and understand but how to deal with Acne can be a little more tricky.

Our skin is not a smooth surface like we think it is. Its actually wavey and in the depth of the wave we have a hair follicle, this hair follicle is also attached to our sebum gland. In a healthy skin the oil from the sebum is a thin smooth oil that travels up the hair shaft and lays over the surface layer called stratum corneum and makes up part of our skins natural defense barrier. Acne happens when this process becomes trapped or slows down. There is 3 reason this:
1: Our skin doesnt exfoliate properly and the dead skin cells fall into the waves, blocking the oil. 2: Our Sebum oil is of poor quality and it is thick and heavy making it hard for it to travel up the hair shaft and becomes sluggish. 3. Our skin natural Ph is upset and creates a environment where p.acne Bacteria (that is naturally found on our skins stratum corneum and protects our inner layers of skin from outside nasties) has to go down the hair shaft to survive and this then becomes seen as a foreign body and starts an inflammation process.

When we start to move into our teen years our skins is going through a lot of changes. And sometimes the skins process cannot keep up with the rapid production of oil and skin cells. Combine this with make up ingredients that clog and cleansers that strip our natural PH balance it becomes a recipe for disaster.

Even though this video shows old skin - when using make up or stripping cleansers it is effectively the same problem - the cells just keep building up and don't desquamate (exfoliate off) on their own causing build of skin and eventually congestion like blackheads.

To prevent acne from forming we need to use high quality tropical ingredients that mimic our skins own natural defense like hyaluronic acid which adds a water and zinc which is great at acting like a natural barrier anti inflammatory and a physical UV protection from the sun (think of a big comfy blanket wrapping around you).

So when our skin does have a play up from hormones that are speeding up the production of oil and skin cells. The fitness level of our skin is strong and healthy to combat the extra oil or blockage that has happened.

If our teen has used alot of make up to cover their spots or the wrong cleanser and upset their skins natural PH is can be a little hard for just homecare to make enough changes within the skin to repair the damage that has already been done and in that case we turn to in clinic treatments to help remove the really built up congested skin. Sometimes we need to even look at medication to stop acne.

I want to make it clear that medication is our last resort and normally a good quality homecare routine, insalon treatments and a good healthy diet that INTERNALLY produces a high quality free flowing oil, will prevent higher grades of acne and what little acne does appear, (because lets face it everyone in their life will have some form of acne at some point in time) will move on and be healed extremely quick because of skin has the strength and ability to move on the blockage in a matter of days rather than a matter of weeks.

I really want to stress that while medications especially antibiotics can fix the symptoms of acne relatively quickly, it does it by reduce the amount of P.acne bacteria found on the surface of the skin. And as I mentioned earlier we need this p.acne as it is part of our skin natural defense against nasties, think smoke pollution etc.

If we continually kill off our p.acne bacteria our skin becomes weakened and while the idea of aging is not a thought most teenages have it will effect the way the skin heals, so when a break out does happen it takes a long time to move that blockage up and out. Not to mention what medications can do to the rest of our bodies natural flora. It is a last resort and in many MANY cases not needed.

We are super excited to be hosting Hervey Bays first Teen education about acne and how to treat and control. It is happening on the Sunday 9th April from 2:30pm. We will be discussing a little more indepth about why a good home care routine and healthy diet is crucial to clear smooth skin and that it is achievable for everyone. I think I tell you everytime I write a blog how much I love the skin and how much the skin just amazes me, I often sit in treatment and watch my clients skin change before right in front of my eyes!! I think it is just so clever and ALIVE.

Well today's topic is water and HYDRATION for the skin. If you have recently been into the salon you will know that we are always taking about giving your skin more hydration, the better hydrated your skin the better the skin will function. The reason we say this is because when the skin LACKS free water the cells, they simply don't communicate properly. So, when of course they don't talk to each other, things start to slow down resulting in sluggish (trapped oil and waste) tired dull looking skin. Think of it like, your skin is a river bed with multiple channels, when it's hydrated the water it is a full flowing river, with that fresh clean clear look too it. However, when it becomes dehydrated the creek bed begins to dry up and the water becomes stagnate because it doesn't move and has that murky dirt tone.

Another VERY important part about Water (also known Hyaluronic Acid) is that it combines with Essential Fatty Acids (oil) and together make up your skin barrier defense, stopping pathogens and free radicals penetrating further down into the dermis. The dermis is like the master of all things skin, our beloved collagen and elastic fibers reside down there. We need to do everything possible to ensure we protect our dermis.

When your skin barrier is comprised, lack of oil or water, free radicals can penetrate past our first few layers of the epidermis (this is above the dermis) and our skin starts to show signs of stress, which result is premature aging and dare I say it the break down of collagen and elastin.

Did you know our skin cells are made up of 64% water! That is a huge amount when you really think about 64% of our SKIN is WATER! Now think about this in our everyday life these things reduce our skins water levels. Remember these are just everyday things

Air ConPollutionSmokeSugary DrinksCoffeeChlorine from swimming poolsSUN - probably the worst culprit doesn't help I live in beautiful sunny Queensland (#wouldntchangeitfortheworld)Cleansers that have surfactant (suck water away from the skin) properties. Hate to break it to you but most cleansers on the shelves in the chemist and supermarket have those ingredients. They do it to make your skin feel "clean" and because it is a cheap ingredient. Look for these ingredients on the back of your cleasner/body wash:

• Stearic acid

• Sodium lauryl sulphate

• Sodium dodecyl sulfate

• Ammonium lauryl sulfate, and other alkyl sulfate salts

• Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES)

• Alkylbenzene sulfonate

Now, that is just everyday things, when you start to factor our diets that contain alot of processed foods, with high sugars and salts, alcohol even coffee you can start to see that we may need a little help in keeping our skin water levels on point,

The other depressing part as we age our skin just ain't what she use be and keep water in is actually really hard. So from 35 onward you don't have the natural ability to hold water in your skin like a 10, 15 or 20 year old can.

AND I am sure I don't need to tell you that you should be drinking 2L of water a day.

Factor in all the things from above sometimes 2ltrs of water is just not going to cut it. Especially if you love the sun or are using a cleanser is a surfactant ingredient.

To keep skin at it absolute best hydration levels here are my top 3 go to skincare products:

1. Use a cleanser with Hyaluronic acid in it, your skin will feel clean and it will instantly put hydration back into your skin from word go.

2. A Hyaluronic Acid Serum, a moisturiser or cream is good but a serum will penetrate deep into the layers of epidermis giving you longer deeper hydration. Because remember it goes epidermis then dermis and the further it goes into the epidermis to closer it is to your dermal layer.

3. ZINC!! Its like the holy grail for us white freckled face Queenslander's (and everyone else of course) Zinc and Titanium Dioxide are the only 2 natural ingredients that PHYSICALLY STOP the sun UV Rays from penetrating into your skin - and protects your skin barrier - which is......... water and oil!!

Is your skin looking Blah, Dull or even looking Old(er)? Maybe its time you check out what your environment is like and more importantly what your skincare range is really doing for you. A few simple changes can bring on a whole new world of dewy looking skin too you.

If you don't know what changes to make or not sure if the skincare range your currently use is causing you to loose water rather help store, come and see myself and the highly trained Skin Therapists at Serenity Skin Spa, we would love to get you on the path to your best skin yet.

Is Microdermabrasion Bad For Your Skin?

Skin has to be far one of my favorite things. So below, in this blog I am talking about Microdermabrasion and how it could possibly benefit you......... or NOT! There are a few types of micro treatments out there at the moment 1. Crystal Microdermabrasion - Involves the use of a hand-held device that propels a high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals that are “blasted” out onto the skin. At the same time, the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals. 2. Hydrodermabrasion - the use of a serum to hydrate the skin while the handheld wand lifts and sucks away dead skin cells. 3.Diamond Microdermabrasion - is an ABRASIVE procedure that will remove the outer surface of the skin. A diamond tipped wand that is then used to “scratch or sand” away the top level of the skin, while the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, debris and dead cells.Sounds like abit of a war scene, skin cells trying to hold on and a vacuum pulling them up and off. But I can assure it's not as aggressive or brutal on the skin as it sounds. If your skin can handle microdermabrasion it is actually really healthy for the skin and in turn your skin will function in a much more productive way. When we exfoliate whether that be from microdermabrasion, scrubs or enzymes, our very clever skin cells sends a message telling the basal layer (our bottom layer of skin) to start producing more cells, creating fresh new plump healthy cells. However........... please don't rush out and scrub your face every single day, there is only so much skin can communicate before you just start to scratch and damage fresh cells, causing micro tears and possible scars.Ahh no thanks!! Microdermabrasion is great way of giving your skin a super quick boost and pick me up, it instantly removes redundant skin cells, revealing new brighter looking skin to the surface. When we remove the redundant cells, your serums and hydrators have a higher penetration ability, creating stronger healthy cells. There is lots of benefits from having this treatment: - lines will reduce, - pigmentation can decrease and become less apparent, - scarring can reduce; and - congestion and pimples can practically go all together.

BUT! There is always a BUT. I personally believe its not just the microdermabrasion that creates the smooth lines and reduces pigment, its the serums and "active ingredients" applied after removing all the redundant cells. Microdermabrasion does a great and quick job of sucking away all the "dead" skin so your products can help the cells that will mostly benefit from it. Think of it like this, when a plant has dead leaves, we pull the leaves off otherwise the plant puts all its efforts by sending all the nutrients and water to the dead leaves, leaving the rest of the plant vulnerable. Your skin does the same thing!

"The not all skin types fit in the same basket." If your skin is fragile, irritates easily, showing signs of rosacea, dermatitis or eczema then I am afraid that this treatment is not right for you. All those skin types and conditions

just mention are predominantly epidermis (top layer of skin) conditions and what does Microdermabrasion do....... removes the outer layer of the epidermis. So if your skin is already aggravated you want avoid creating more havoc by trying to remove these already fragile cells. You need to rebuild those cell structures.. (worthy of its own dedicated blog which I will post in the coming weeks.)Who benefits Most? If your skin has a little bit of resistance it will love Mirco! If its sun damaged and showing signs of premature aging, this is perfect for you. Skin that has not exfoliated in god knows how long and has a massive build up of thicken dead skin....... OH YEAH this is for you. To end this blog, that went alot longer than my original idea. (sorry and thanks for reading till the end! Leave a comment so I know people actually read what I write) I believe that Microdermabrasion is a great modality to help achieve gorgeous skin, but it is not the whole answer. It is a very important piece of the puzzle when creating solutions. If you are not sure if microdermabrasion is right for you and your skin concerns, talk to a qualified Skin Therapist who knows what will be the best basket for you.

If you would like to book a skin consultation with myself or qualified therapists, click here.

10 MUST Know's Before IPL

Its starting to become one of the most COMMON hair removal treatments out there, but you are still slightly skeptical. Do you really want that kind of light near your precious bits? And what even is IPL anyway? IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light. The combination of light and energy, used in short waves of intense energy and light that when it reaches a target (in this case hair) it destroys the target.

1. DOES IT REALLY WORK?

You can put that eyebrow down, because YES IT REALLY DOES WORK. It has to be the best method of hair removal out there on the market at this present time. The light and heat combined will reduce the hair by up to 80%, and the growth that is left is soft, fine and very very slow growing.

(Can I get a hell yeh?!)

2. WHEN SHOULD YOU START;

NOW you should start NOW! But really NOW, winter is the absolute best time to start IPL hair removal, as you are less likely to show skin in the freezing cold days. The more pale your skin and darker your hair, the better results your are going to get. so seriously start NOW.

3. IT'S NOT FOR ALL HAIR TYPES:

So yes it really does work but not for everyone, IPL is a light based technology and that means it's attracted to dark pigment in the hair. SO if you hair is red, blonde, grey or white sorry its back to waxing for you. (Sucks I know, try being the technician, a redhead. I get to watch all my lucky clients' hair disappear right before my eyes while mine grows back again and again.)

4. NOTHING IS PERMANENT:

Hate to break this one to you but nothing is permanent, your body is constantly changing hormone levels and with that comes hair growth fluctuations. But and it's a BIG BUT if you keep your maintenance treatments every 6 months to a year, you will always keep your hair at minimal growth and relatively at 20%.

5. SO HOW DOES IT WORK:

In the short video below is hair that has been shot with IPL, the heat and the light absorb any water the hair may hold and then burn the hair/germ cell so that it can not longer function properly. This person's hair was deliberately left long so we could see in slow motion of how the light actually affects the hair. But normally this is all happening under the surface of skin as leaving hair on the top of the skin will just cause the heat and energy to be lost. So if you ever have a treatment and can smell a slight burnt hair smell this is why -

6. SAY GOODBYE TO WAXING:

No more PAINFUL waxing, its time to say good bye to all forms of waxing, tweezing or plucking. For IPL to be successful the hair needs to be under the surface of the skin. The light needs a medium to travel down to reach the germ cell, the light and energy from the light will ultimately destroy the germ cell.

I know I know shaving sounds so scary especially when we are talking the dread moe or chin area, but the benefits of IPL GREATLY out way consistently having the tweeze or wax every few weeks.

7. IS IT REALLY PAINFUL:

This really depends on your pain threshold, mine is practically non existent and I found the pigment photo rejuvenation (another great thing this machine does) tolerable. The first couple flashes give you a little shock and you are a little unprepared. But once you know its coming most my clients breeze through it and ALWAYS say this is so MUCH BETTER THAN WAXING. ( If I could charge a $1 for every time I hear this I could retire already!)

SO what does it really feel like? A hot pin prick. It's instant HEAT, then it's all over, slight flushing of warmth after maybe. The best part? It gets easier as your progress through your treatments, because there is less hair = less energy is being drawn into the skin so you can not feel it as much, win win!!

8. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE:

This really is one of my favorite things about IPL, is how QUICK IT IS! small areas seriously only take like 15 minutes max, once we know your skin and hair type and how your respond to the treatment it gets even quicker. For such phenomenal results it really is super quick. Its over in a flash of light literally...

9. HOW MANY TREATMENTS:

We are finding most our clients need about 8 treatments then it is spread out - we normally work it like this 6 - 8 treatments at 4 weeks then the 9th,10th treatment 12 weeks apart and the 11th, 12th 6 monthly. YOU MUST come back for the 12 week and 6 monthly treatments otherwise you notice all our hard work slowly coming undone. You see the hair only disappears when the germ cell is not functioning. In order to reach the germ cell the hair must be attached to the germ cell. Which is only 25% of the time. If the hair is NOT attached to, your hair will still be shocked and growth is slowed but ultimately it will comeback.

10. 2 MOST COMMON PHRASES WE HEAR IN THE TREATMENT ROOMS:

When I first perform an IPL treatment after the first shot of light typically a client's responses with, "Is that it? That doesn't hurt that bad" followed by their next appointment "I should've started this ages ago" to which I always respond, "You owe me a dollar".

Side note:

And just so you know I DELIBERATELY LEFT OUT SIDE EFFECTS, because yes there are side effects but I have seen more reactions to waxing and those god awful hair removal creams than I have in my 7 years of IPL. To create DAMAGE you have to be pretty heavily inexperienced with no qualifications (and just to give us a little plug we are heavily qualified with the highest Post Graduate Certificate available and continual training because we love what we do).

Is Active Skincare just more HYPE?

You are hearing it more and more, 'active" ingredients and "delivery systems" but you have no idea what they mean and if its just not ANOTHER marketing hype word.Well I am here to tell you that they are DEFINITELY NOT just another hype word that skincare companies have made up. Well ALL products contain various ingredients, these do all sorts of things like create the texture, smell, absorption abilities or preservatives. The ACTIVE ingredient part will make changes to the skins health and function. It will help create healthy beautiful skin. BUUUUUUUTTTT....

It's not as simple as that to gorgeous skin... (if only)

It depends on the level or amount of active in the product . If the product contains only a small amount of active and the rest is filled with preservatives, texturisers or parabens, chances are the there isn't enough to actually make any changes to the skin because the amount in each pump is not enough to penetrate the skins barrier.

When looking for active ingredients, your product needs to contain at least 60% OR MORE active ingredients of the TOTAL PRODUCT, O Cosmedics products contain 80% active ingredients, which will result in healthly functioning skin and slows down the aging process. Generic/supermarket brands can contain less than 10% active ingredietns and therefore creating no real change to the skins health or function.

Active ingredients can only penetrate so far before our skin barrier rejects anything it doesn't recognise as its own and thus the active will not go any further down. SO it can end up failing to reach its actual destination where it is the most effective.

DELVERY SYSTEMS:

This is where delivery systems come in to play. Delivery systems "trick" the skin into believing its one of its own and will allow the ingredient to penetrate deeper to reach its destination.

Peptides you have heard the word, but what is it? WELL its a delivery system for active ingredients. (Cool hey) Peptides are proteins JUST LIKE OUR SKIN, so when they go onto the skin, the skin will allow the peptides to move past the barrier, once past, the peptide will break down allowing the active ingredient to be released deeper. (clever hey)

Its important to know what active ingredients and delivery systems are right for you and your skins health. Its always advised to talk to a skin therapist about the right skincare plan for you.

Bridal Bootcamp - Part 1: Skin Analysis

Lauren is getting married and we are so excited to see the results as we whoop her skin's b*tt through bridal bootcamp, Serenity Skin edition! We have started the process approximately 10 months out from the wedding to ensure we have enough time to assess and repair Lauren's skin concerns and then maintain it up until the big day for the OPTIMAL BRIDAL GLOW!

Step 1 – The Consultation & Skin Assessment

So that we can perfectly personalise Lauren's treatment course, the first step is to have a consultation to gage her skin concerns and perform a full assessment of her skin. In the video below you will see Cassie analysing the skin under a
professional woods lamp
which is an effective diagnostic tool that allows the visualisation of skin concerns that are otherwise difficult to see with the naked eye. Once Cassie has completed the analysis of the skin she will then complete a (you can see the completed prescription below) that will highlight her findings and then set out a treatment plan inclusive of the necessary ingredients and skincare that Lauren requires to achieve her #SKINGOALS.

Video 1 - Preparing the Skin

Video 2 - Skin Analysis & Recommended Treatment Plan

Prescription Face Map

Cassie has recommended for best results that Lauren undergo a course of Pro Dermal Peelswhich will assist in strengthening the skin, followed by Skin Needling to assist in healing & boosting collagen production to repair open pores and scarring.

As shown on the treatment plan below, Cassie has recommended that the initial Peels be performed 2 weeks apart which is essential when we are trying to achieve change within the skin. Treatment need to be consistent and regular to ensure the skin does not return to its normal state before change has occurred. This process can be thought of very similarly as trying to achieved change to the body at the gym.

Most skin concerns are caused by rogue cells or systems a few layers deep within the skin. To successfully create healthy skin we need to keep encouraging healthy behavior repeatedly until it becomes habit (Just like muscles have memory when training). The peels will work to remove redundant cells from the surface and encourage new healthy cells to be created. Furthermore, Cassie has recommended the use of Skin Needling as a delivery system which will transport the ingredients of the salon treatments and home skincare to the deepest layers of the skin. These delivery systems can only be used by professionals.

We will discuss each treatment in detail as Lauren continues through her treatment course.

We believe that the Key Ingredient to beautiful skin is TRUST in the 3 P's:

THE PROFESSIONALTHE PRODUCTS THE PROCESS

Through commitment and trust in the three P's, Lauren is going to see incredible results!

Ingredients to Trust & Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy!

Recent years have seen an incredible advancement in skincare, with the introduction of new core findings that have significantly improved the delivery system of the active ingredients, allowing them to penetrate to the deeper layers of skin and achieve positive change like we've never seen before. Unfortunately, the use of Vitamin A should be ceased during pregnancy as high levels can sometimes cause birth defects and other complications. While through topical application you would require an excessive amount to be used for it to reach and penetrate the blood system, it is simply not adviseable to take the risk during pregnancy. In replace of Vitamin A we love Hyaluronic Acid, which is a gel-like molecule that retains water within the skin, keeping it super hydrated and strengthening its outer barriers allowing it to be free from any free radical damage that would require Vitamin A for repair. We love O Cosmedics Pure Age Defiance which is fortifide with Hyaluronic Acid's super hydrating qualities and amazing biomimic crystals that ensure the nutrients reach the bottom layer cells and promote healthy skin growth.

Sayalic Acid - If you suffer from oily skin or breakouts then you would be familiar with this oil-loving active that can be found in many cleansers targeted at problematic skin. Unfortunately, as it's part of the Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA's) family it can create pregnancy complications when consumed in high doses. In replace of Salacylic Acid we recommended Vitamin B3 which is incredible in controlling pigmentation, reducing inflammation, balancing oil flow and also fighting bacteria during breakouts.

Another thing to be sure of during pregnancy is that your sunscreen doesn't contain oxybenzone. This chemical, which readily absorbs into your skin, has been linked to low birth weight which is a risk factor for future coronary heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and other diseases. It’s also known to interfere with the body's hormones, which may cause developmental problems in unborn babies. A physical sunblock (versus basic sunscreen) is the always the right choice. Zinc and Titamiun Dioxde comes in as the lowest allergy rate in sunscreens. Zinc is also an anti-inflammorty and reduces redness which is perfect for the pregnancy breakouts.

If you're not sure what you can and can't use during your pregnancy, we always recommended going to see your skin therapist as they can provide professional knowledge to guide you towards a healthy and glowing pregnancy skin.

Lipid Dry Skin - Fight Ageing with Hydration

So you may have heard a thousand times from sales assistance and therapists that dry skin causes wrinkles but not often are you told why. So understandably, it is difficult for many people to commit to great skincare and proper nourishment if you do not fully understand your skin and have a basic education of how dry skin can certainly speed up the ageing process.

Dry skin characteristically has fewer and less active sebaceous glands meaning that there is minimal oil production and therefore a significant lack of moisture in the Corneous layer of the skin due to it's inefficient ability to bind and retain water. Chronic dehydration within the skin is a contributing factor in the loss of elasticity which in turn will highlight the common characteristics of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, dry skin will commonly experience flaking and irritation leaving its skin's barrier susceptible to the effects of many harmful environmental factors such as UV radiation which play a huge role in the ageing process.

So what is the best way to get moisture back into dry skin? The following are some of our top skin care and dietary recommendations for achieving optimal hydration.

O Cosmedics Pure Age Define Serum: As the name suggests, this is the absolute golden child of anti-ageing technology. Among many other heroic ingredients within this product, the inclusion of Sodium Hyaluronate encourages hydration due to its ability to hold 1000x its weight in water while restoring the skin's barrier function, actually plumping fine lines and wrinkles.

O Cosmedics Immortal Cream: Containing L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), this product will play a significant role in supporting the stability of the skin's collagen molecules. Collagen represents 75% of the skin's dry weight and its quantity and quality plays a large role in the skin's youthful appearance. Immortal cream also contains Encapsulated Resveratrol which is an antioxidant from the skin of red wine grapes, a natural anti-inflammatory, slowing cell ageing and protecting collagen.

Essential Fatty Acids: Your body requires a healthy intake of essential fatty acids to thrive and as it does not produce these on its own, it is essential to ensure you that you have a balanced intake within your diet. These polyunsaturated fats also help produce the skin's natural oil barrier, critical in keeping skin hydrated, plumper, and younger looking. Foods high in essential fatty acids are avocado, coconut flesh and oil, walnuts, flax seeds and soy products.

Remember that hydration is the key to treating dry skin, always avoid using any harsh ingredient base products and aim towards consuming a healthy diet with a balanced intake of essential fatty acids. If you aren't sure of your current skin care, always consult with a qualified skin therapist who can assist you with an effective treatment plan.

Oily Skin - Prescription Skincare for No More Shine!

If you missed our blog post last week, we had a chat about the three basic skin types and explained some significant characteristics of each to help you identify to which group you belong. If you belong to the oily skin crew then it's likely that you knew your skin type long before reading our post. You probably have a make-up case full of 'no-shine' foundations and have tried every 'stay-matte' product on the market. We understand that oily-skin can be frustrating at times so we want to let you in on the key hero ingredients to look out for and your specialised prescription skin care regime that will help you keep your skin clear, youthful and oil-free.

Step 1 – Cleansing the Skin:

Due to the excess sebum production of the skin, it is vital for those with oily skin to commit to a twice daily cleansing routine. Cleansing once in the morning and then twice in the evening to first remove any makeup and products worn throughout the day and a second time to properly clean out the pores and leave the skin clear and refreshed.

Look for cleansers that contain Salicylic Acid which is a lipophiloc, meaning it combines and dissolves oils and fats in the skin. The Salicylic Acid gets into the pores and sucks the oil out, assisting in the prevention of condomes (blackheads) and pustles (pimples) which are caused by excess oil in the pores combining with dirt and dead skin cells, causing blockages.

As an everyday cleanser we recommend O Cosmedics Gentle Antioxidant Cleanser which is fortified with anti-pollutant boosters that trap and remove dirt and excess sebum, while being gentle enough to use around sensitive areas for the removal of eye makeup. For particularly problematic skin, the O Cosmedics Corrective Cleanser & Peel can be used 2-3 times weekly and is designed specifically to control oil flow while gently exfoliating dead skin cells, unclogging congested pores and discouraging impurities. Due to the highly active qualities of the Corrective Cleanser & Peel, always consult with a qualified therapist before obtaining for use.

Step 2 – Correcting the Skin:

Applying a corrective serum is the second step in your skin care regime and the absolute key to skin changing results. All corrective products should be applied to the clean skin immediately after cleansing and before moisturising. Retinol and Vitamin C are absolute musts to look for when choosing correctives for oily skin. Both ingredients help to improve elasticity in the skin which ensures the tightening of pores and ultimately reducing the amount of oil that they can emit. As an added bonus, improving the skin's elasticity is also critical to fighting the signs of ageing.

For mornings, we recommend O Cosmedics Pure C & BHA combined with their Pure Age Defiance Serum. This combo ensures a super boost of Vitamin C while the serum offers unbeatable hydration and great soothing properties, the perfect breakfast for your skin! For the evening, you can't go past Potent Retinol Serum which is an absolute golden star of O
Cosmedics, promoting optimal firmness and elasticity in the skins texture.

To ensure the achievement of optimal results, all O Cosmedics serums are formulated around Liquid Crystals, which are a BIOMIMETIC restructuring agent which supports the transportation of the potent active igredients into the deeper layers of the skin, such as the Sebacious Gland which is where oil is produced. Biomimetic is a fancy word for "to mimic nature" meaning that the optimal goal of the corrective serums in mimic the structure of the skins layers and return them to their optimal state of function.

Step 3 – Hydrating the Skin

It is frequent of people with oily skin to skip out on the moisturiser as they feel their skin doesn't need it. Actually, oil is not the same thing as moisture, and it's common for oily skin to peel and show signs of dehydration. Rehydrating the skin is the third step of every skin care regime and is critically for maintaining the youthful appearance of the skin. Moisturiser should be applied morning and night after cleansing and the application of any corrective serums.

Of course, it is particularly important to choose the right
oil-free moisturiser to help balance out the higher levels of sebum production in oily skin. Sodium Hyaluronate is the key ingredient to look for as it is a lightweight hydrating ingredient that is capable of binding 1,800 times its own weight in water and therefore retains and preserves moisture in the skin without contributing to excess oil production.

We recommend O Cosmedics Rebalancing Cream which is leightweight, oil-free and designed specifically to target bacteria, excessive oil production and build-up on the skin's surface. Along with Sodium Hyluronate, it also includes Kombucha which is an antioxidant which enhances smoothness and radiance, fighting the sallow appearance often caused by oily skin.

It is important to remember to consult with a qualified therapist before beginning any new skin care regime. Our prescription skincare for oily skin as described above is the optimal goal, however when using products with highly active cosmedical ingredients it is important to firstly ensure the healing of the skin's barrier and it is not recommended to begin numerous new products all at once. As a guide, we recommend starting off with 2-3 essential products and gradually introducing new ingredients over the period recommended by your therapist.

Remember to be patient, beautiful skin cannot be achieved though miracles. It starts with exceptional skincare and lasts through the commitment to your skin's health.

O Cosmedics Pure C + BHA powder's amazing ability to combat toxins and free radicals.

Which skin type are you?

We are exposed to an industry overflowing with different brands offering hundreds of different products, modified for all different skin types and they are all trying to tell you that their product is the miracle your skin has been searching for. The problem is, beautiful skin cannot be achieved miraculously and in fact requires commitment to the right skin care regime designed specifically for you. So in saying that...

the number one first step to beautiful skin is understanding your skin type.

Contrary to the marketing hype there really is only THREE basic skin types;

Lipid Dry: Characteristics to best describe this skin type are dull, rough and flaky. Those with lipid dry skin can often have open (blackheads) or closed (white heads) comedones around the nose wing. Comedones are caused by Keratin (dead skin cells) combining with oil to block the pore. Lipid dry skin can also appear blotchy or uneven and can have signs of premature aging. There is minimal oil flow over the majority of the face and will therefore rarely have an oily sheen or glossy appearance. Fine capillaries (fine branching blood vessels) may be present.

Oily: Individuals with oily skin experience over activity from their sebaceous gland, meaning there is excessive production of sebum (lubricative oily matter) resulting in an all over glossy sheen. The skin is thicker in texture and there is often visibly open pores through the t-zone. People with oily skin are also prone to open and closed condomes and pustles (pimples) appearing on the face and neck. Furthermore, the appearance of oily skin is often dull and lifeless with a sallow complexion.

Diffused Redness: Individuals defined under this skin type experience permanent patches of redness spread across the face, however most commonly localised around the nose, nose wings, cheeks and near the front of the ears. Spontaneous flushing is also not uncommon around the cheeks, sides of the neck and also throat. The skin's texture is characteristically fine resulting in it being easily damaged or scarred.

As you were reading each characteristic you may have found that your skin identifies with more than one of the 3 basic skin types. This is not uncommon and your skin's diagnoses is decided by a basic majority rule. An accurate analysis of your skin is crucial in determining how you should nourish and treat your skin as using the wrong products for your skin type can cause aggravation and worsen the skin's health.

If you are unsure of your skin type or have any skin concerns and are seeking a professional diagnoses then we recommend that you book a skin consultation with a qualified therapist who can provide a thorough analysis of your skin and prescribe an effective treatment plan.
